This very large statue of the "Great Leader" is visited, along with the other sacred sights of Pyongyang, by every single citizen of Pyongyang and surrounding suburbs, every month, on the anniversary of his death. This picture was taken in December 1995, 17 months after Kim Il-sung's death.
This song, "Generalisimo Kim Il Sung is with us forever," was playing over loud speakers as people somberly walked up to the statue with flowers. Flower bouquets are for sale around the statue for this purpose. Also, the overhead area on the plane I flew to Pyongyang was filled with flower bouquets, hand carried back from Beijing for the statue and other memorial places.
If you have any interest in some totally amateur video I shot in the DPRK, E-mail me for details. It's over 2 hours long and includes Pyongyang, the 50th workers party celebration, and a little of the countryside for $30 US. The worker's celebration alone is well worth seeing. The still photos just don't do it justice.
